Under-stairs storage in Roxbourne, Harrow
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Roxbourne starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- The low end of the space going to waste
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
Under-stairs storage in Roxbourne
Under-stairs storage for homes in Roxbourne
In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, usually with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. At the design visit in Roxbourne, we note what’s there and design around it. If you’re living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Roxbourne, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What we do not do
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. We size each drawer for what it will carry. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Under-stairs storage in Roxbourne: local notes
In the streets around Roxbourne, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 76%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Roxbourne is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Harrow sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Roxbourne, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Living in a block of flats near South Ruislip station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Headstone Manor, about 1.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If you live near Eastcote House Gardens, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Ruislip station?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is Roxbourne in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Roxbourne is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Harrow and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, usually behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.

- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
