Under-Stairs Storage in Sanderstead

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Sanderstead, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop

Under-stairs storage for homes in Sanderstead

Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Sanderstead and fitted. If your home has a low corner too deep to reach into and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. Around Sanderstead, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sanderstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Riddlesdown station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you are after

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why choose us

  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Sanderstead

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

If you live in a flat close to Riddlesdown station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

For families living near Gresham Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Littleheath Woods, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
