Under-stairs storage in South Croydon
When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. For a home in South Croydon, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Typical reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and storage that doesn’t match the hallway, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Older homes like many around South Croydon have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around South Croydon date from then. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What else we make in South Croydon
Questions we are often asked
My home in South Croydon is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Croydon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it looks like part of the house.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in South Croydon?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, South Croydon included.

What happens on fitting day
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed.
- Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.

How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Related advice
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Tips worth knowing
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
- Let us know about parking near your home
Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it’s best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything isn’t right, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will talk it through.
Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.
How it’s made
Doors and drawer fronts
What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to suit the room. Their tops follow the angle of the stairs.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
