Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage for homes in Northumberland Park
Each under-stairs cupboard is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Northumberland Park and fitted. Typical reasons to get in touch are no room for a small desk or a place to work and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Wherever your home in Northumberland Park sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s usually a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

When you need someone else
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
- Hand-painted finish
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. Storage made for the space and painted to suit the hall finishes the job. Decorating is for your decorator, so it is useful to tell us your plans early.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
Bruce Castle, about 0.8 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Flats, conversions and lettings
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
Under-stairs storage in Northumberland Park: local notes
About 35% of the homes in the area around Northumberland Park went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 18 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Northumberland Park. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Northumberland Park is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live near Bruce Castle Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Northumberland Park
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Northumberland Park?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Northumberland Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
