Stamford Hill Fitted Cupboards

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Stamford Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

Fitted cupboards in Stamford Hill: what you get

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. A large share of the homes around Stamford Hill were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Stamford Hill homes and fitted cupboards

About 52% of the homes in the area around Stamford Hill went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Stamford Hill include Church of St Andrew (Grade II*), under half a mile west, and Church of St Bartholomew (Grade II*), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Purpose-built flats are home to about 46% of households in the streets around Stamford Hill, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live near Abney Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Living in a block of flats near Stamford Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For families living near Holmleigh Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Questions we are often asked

My house in Stamford Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Stamford Hill station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
