Under-stairs storage for your home in Upper Clapton

Under-stairs storage in Upper Clapton

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. The same careful process applies to any home in Upper Clapton. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and open space under the stairs that collects clutter.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room isn’t. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Upper Clapton

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.5 miles south. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

How to choose a carpenter in London

Upper Clapton homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Upper Clapton were built before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Upper Clapton, Historic England’s list includes White Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Church of St Thomas (Grade II), under half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Upper Clapton is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a flat close to Clapton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Springfield Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Upper Clapton is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 3 miles south of Shoreditch. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Upper Clapton is part of that. Our work takes in places right across Hackney, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

When you need someone else

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Upper Clapton

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Clapton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. At the design visit we’ll say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
