Fitted wardrobes in Stamford Hill: what you get
The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Stamford Hill, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Hanging rails
Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.
Fitting day, step by step
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.
What we do not do
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, so you get more storage from the same floor space.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Real projects you can actually look at
Questions we’re often asked
My house in Stamford Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
I live near Stamford Hill station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Stamford Hill
About 52% of the homes in the area around Stamford Hill went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Stamford Hill, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the neighbourhood around Stamford Hill, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your children go to Holmleigh Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
