West Hampstead Under-Stairs Storage

We make under-stairs storage for homes in West Hampstead, designed around the room you have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Under-stairs storage in West Hampstead: what you get

Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in West Hampstead and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are the low end of the space going to waste and no room for a small desk or a place to work.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around West Hampstead were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What affects the price in West Hampstead

Several things affect the price:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and made at our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

How it is made

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home, once the storage is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch in later, which suits a busy hallway.

West Hampstead homes and under-stairs storage

In the streets around West Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Hampstead include Church of St John (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), less than half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 63% of homes in the neighbourhood around West Hampstead were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In terraced houses of that age, the space under the stairs often holds the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, and they must stay reachable.

If you live in a period home close to Presbyterian Church Of St Andrew, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Fenton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from West Hampstead

I live in a flat in West Hampstead. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in West Hampstead?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do I get started?

The first step is to use our contact form with a few details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
