Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

How we make under-stairs storage for Seven Dials

Not every staircase is in a house. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. The same careful process applies to any home in Seven Dials. If your home has open space under the stairs that collects clutter and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Seven Dials date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Seven Dials

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Seven Dials were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Seven Dials include Church of St Giles in the Fields (Grade I), under half a mile north-west, and Royal Opera House (Grade I), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are more common around Seven Dials than across Camden: about 78% of households, against about 56%, according to Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

If you live near St Anne's Churchyard, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a flat near Tottenham Court Road station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Seven Dials is in the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras. Whether your home in Seven Dials is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Seven Dials among 28 places we cover in Camden.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know if the hall is being decorated
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Closing drawers fully helps keep the runners and fronts in good order. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. If it is ever chipped, it can be touched up.

Doors and drawer fronts

Any access door for a meter can be made to look like the other fronts. It opens wide so readings and checks are easy. Around it, the other fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Questions from Seven Dials

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Seven Dials?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Seven Dials affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.
