Under-stairs storage in West End, Camden
We make under-stairs storage in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in West End. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Boards, parts and paint
Pull-out drawers
Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. We plan the mix at the measuring visit.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it’s best treated gently at first.
Under-stairs storage for homes in West End
No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in West End or anywhere else. Typical reasons to get in touch are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and coats and shoes piling up in the hall; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Around West End, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Tell us about parking during the design visit
- Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. It is worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Under-stairs storage for homes in West End
In the area around West End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 934 entries within half a mile of the centre of West End. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. For fitting in West End, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
If you live near St Anne's Churchyard, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For families living near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near St Mary's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Questions we are often asked
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in West End?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in West End?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What affects the price of under-stairs storage?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
What happens on fitting day
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
