FAQs: under-stairs storage in Hampstead

I live near Finchley Road & Frognal station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Hampstead?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Under-stairs storage in Hampstead: what you get

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a low corner too deep to reach into and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Hampstead date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well

When we have finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Hampstead homes and under-stairs storage

Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around Hampstead, with about 9% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 363 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hampstead. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Around Hampstead, about 68% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Camden as a whole, about 49%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

The wider area includes historic houses like Fenton House, about 0.4 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live in a period home close to St John-at-Hampstead church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. Living in a block of flats near Finchley Road & Frognal station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What we don’t do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
