Under-stairs storage in Bloomsbury: what you get

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. The same careful process applies to any home in Bloomsbury. If your home has a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Most households around Bloomsbury live in purpose-built flats, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitted storage in Bloomsbury

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bloomsbury were built before 1919 (about 44%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 448 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bloomsbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Bloomsbury (about 44%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Under the stairs in an older terrace is often where the meters or the fuse board are, so the design keeps them accessible.

Living in a block of flats near London Euston station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Bloomsbury is in the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras. Wherever you are in Bloomsbury, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Bloomsbury is one of the places in Camden where we make under-stairs storage, and the borough has 28 places on our list.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Bloomsbury

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bloomsbury?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

My home in Bloomsbury is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so let us know about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How square the room is

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, message us from the contact page.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Pull-out drawers

A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
