How it is made

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.

TV and media units for homes in West Hampstead

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. Viewing height matters too: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about nowhere good for speakers and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room.

A large share of the homes around West Hampstead were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Do you need TV and media units in West Hampstead?

Open-plan living is another reason. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Cables trailing across the wall

If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Questions we are often asked

Can you make TV and media units for a home in West Hampstead?

Yes, we work across Camden, West Hampstead included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in West Hampstead is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits. Each box should have its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The unit is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What TV and media units can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

TV and media units for homes in West Hampstead

In the streets around West Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of West Hampstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in West Hampstead is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For an older house near Presbyterian Church Of St Andrew, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. The wider area includes historic houses like Fenton House, about 0.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

West Hampstead is within the London Borough of Camden, about 4 miles south-east of St Pancras. Anywhere in West Hampstead, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our Camden coverage includes West Hampstead.

Here we cover the NW3, NW6 and NW2 postcode area for TV and media units. You’ll find streets here like Mill Lane, Acol Road and Ajax Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Main roads around West Hampstead include the A502, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover the places around West Hampstead: Fortune Green (1 mile west), Hampstead (1 mile east), Greenhill (1 mile east), Childs Hill (1 mile north-west) and Vale of Health (1 mile north-east). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like St Pancras (4 miles south-east), West End (4 miles south-east), St Giles (4 miles south-east), Seven Dials (4 miles south-east), Holborn (4 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (3 miles south-east).

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
