Loft storage in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets
Planning loft storage for a home in Whitechapel? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
Ask about loft storage in Whitechapel
Is it time for loft storage?
A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
- Low eaves that nobody can use
For families living near Canon Barnett Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
Choosing a carpenter
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
Loft storage in Whitechapel
A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Whitechapel, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised.
Many homes around Whitechapel were built since 2000, and newer houses that have had the loft converted often have sloping ceilings and eaves to use. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Wherever they go, eaves cupboards are fixed to suit the wall.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
- We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- The cupboards and drawers are made in our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs.
- We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Converting the loft itself, which is not our work
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Approval for structural changes
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Eaves doors and drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Storage in Whitechapel homes: local notes
In the streets around Whitechapel, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 271 entries within half a mile of the centre of Whitechapel. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Whitechapel. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Botolph, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Mansion House, about 0.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
Common questions about loft storage
I live near Whitechapel station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
My home in Whitechapel is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Drawers in the knee wall typically involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. We set it all out in a written quote.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
