About fitted wardrobes in E1W
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Most enquiries start with storage boxes stacked under the bed and wardrobes that are full to bursting, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need, and we arrange a design visit.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
What goes into your quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Starting with a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across E1W: local notes
If your bedroom in E1W has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
Homes built since 2000 make up about 40% of the housing in E1W, with about 23% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 40% of homes in the E1W postcode district were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 79% of households in the E1W postcode district, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
E1W is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Whitechapel: For a family home near Canon Barnett Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a flat close to Whitechapel station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.
When you need someone else
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Building work to create a loft room
What prompts fitted wardrobes
Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Not enough hanging space
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
What affects the price in E1W
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How big the furniture is
- The number of doors and drawers
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What materials do you use?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. The materials are named in your written quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
