Under-stairs storage in Roehampton

The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In Roehampton, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with the low end of the space going to waste and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In homes from the post-war decades, the boiler may live in a cupboard. Any new cupboard around it keeps the clearances its manufacturer sets out. With many homes around Roehampton built between 1945 and the early 1970s, that is one of the things we check at the design visit. Any boiler work is for a Gas Safe engineer.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Advice

What prompts under-stairs storage in Roehampton

The low end of the space is usually the problem. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

For a flat near Barnes station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Fitted storage in Roehampton

In the area around Roehampton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Roehampton, Historic England’s list includes Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital) (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Downshire House (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. All of London, Wandsworth included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Roehampton. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 1.3 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your children go to Granard Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Roehampton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Roehampton?

Yes, Roehampton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, leases and landlords

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
