Window seats for your home in Wimbledon Park

How we make window seats for Wimbledon Park

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers are easier to reach if there’s a cushion on top. We’ll talk through which suits the way you use the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes in an area like Wimbledon Park can come from many different periods, and so do the awkward corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Electrical work around the seat

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Radiator grilles
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Birch plywood

Why bespoke in Wimbledon Park?

Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

About 42% of homes in the streets around Wimbledon Park were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bays and sash windows in period houses suit a seat with drawers or a lift-up lid, with a grille where there is a radiator below.

Close to King George's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For a family home near Albemarle Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Common questions about window seats

Do you make window seats for homes in Wimbledon Park?

Yes. Wimbledon Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Wimbledon Park?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Is it time for window seats?

Parents often want a window seat for a child’s room, with toy storage below. Drawers keep toys within easy reach. It helps keep the room tidy.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Needing more storage in the room
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • A bay window that is hard to furnish
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Old Rectory House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

What affects the cost of window seats

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
