What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
- At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
- We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Arranging a design visit

Under-stairs storage for homes in Loxford
Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in Loxford, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are needing a compact spot for a laptop and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.
In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Loxford, door styles are talked through at the design visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

What we don’t do
Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Making use of awkward spaces in Loxford
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Loxford were built before 1919 (about 39%) and since 2000 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Loxford, Historic England’s list includes Barking Station Booking Hall (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Loxford is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live near Loxford Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For families living near Woodlands Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 1.2 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose us
- Built around your room
- Saturdays by arrangement
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Scribed to uneven walls
See our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Loxford
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Loxford?
Yes. Loxford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Loxford?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through at the design visit.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.
