Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage in Woodford
Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a staircase with untidy space beneath it.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Woodford, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.
Why us?

- Finished by spray or by hand
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What else we make in Woodford
Under-stairs storage for homes in Woodford
About 33% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Woodford went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Woodford Broadway Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Woodford. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 33% of homes in the neighbourhood around Woodford date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar houses typically have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.
If you live near The Highams Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 2.7 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For a family home near Woodbridge High School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- The overall size of the piece
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking near your home
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

Questions we are often asked
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Woodford?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Woodford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, typically behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
