Walk-in wardrobes in Barking, Barking and Dagenham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Barking, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Shelves for shoes and bags

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about long versus double hanging

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Barking

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. Typical reasons to get in touch are proper shoe storage and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Around Barking, where many homes were built since 2000, it is part of every design visit. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Barking

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Barking?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Barking is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Barking station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Getting consent under your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Bedroom storage in Barking

About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Barking went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Barking. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Barking and Dagenham included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Barking is covered by it. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

If you live near Mayesbrook Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Eastbury Manor House, about 0.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For a family home near Eastbury Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
