Walk-in wardrobes in Becontree Heath
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A basic rail system is easy to change, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Becontree Heath
You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we’ll go through it when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and shelves for shoes and bags.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Becontree Heath, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
- We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Arranging a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
- Think about long versus double hanging
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
- Think about where shoes and bags will go
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.
A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
On a cooler external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, alongside good ventilation.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit smaller things, and they can sit below the hanging or shelves.
Honest limits
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Curing damp in the walls
- Getting consent under your lease
- Electrical work in the room
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Chadwell Heath station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Becontree Heath?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.
How long does fitting take?
Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Becontree Heath homes and walk-in wardrobes
About 55% of the homes in the streets around Becontree Heath went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Becontree Heath, Historic England’s list includes Bentry Heath House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If your children go to All Saints Catholic School and Technology College or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a period home close to Hartley Brook Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Parsloes Park? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
