Loft storage designed for your room

How we make loft storage for Becontree Heath

A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it’s low. It uses the full height of the room. We will plan it at the design visit in Becontree Heath. If your home has a loft room that still feels unfinished and a dormer that isn’t being used, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Becontree Heath, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

Doors and drawer fronts

The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Their tops follow the line of the slope.

Common questions about loft storage

Do you cover homes near Chadwell Heath station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Becontree Heath?

Yes, Becontree Heath is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How much does loft storage cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Becontree Heath

In the area around Becontree Heath, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Becontree Heath, Historic England’s list includes Bentry Heath House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Becontree Heath (about 29%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

If you live in a flat close to Chadwell Heath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to All Saints Catholic School and Technology College or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near Hartley Brook Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

What we don’t do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Any work on the structure of the house

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.
