How we make TV and media units for Becontree Heath
The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. People typically come to us about boxes with no ventilation and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In an area like Becontree Heath, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

FAQs: TV and media units in Becontree Heath
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Becontree Heath?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Becontree Heath is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Becontree Heath?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How do you hide the TV cables?
That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment.
- We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
- You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
- We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Is it time for TV and media units?
Families with consoles, games and controllers want them tidied away. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight.
We are often asked to help with:
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Boxes with no ventilation
For a flat near Chadwell Heath station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
What to check before you book
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
