Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Little Stanmore

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. If you are living with a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Little Stanmore, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What it’s made from

Hanging rails

Full-length hanging suits coats and long garments, with double hanging elsewhere.

Moisture-resistant MDF

On a cooler external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, with ventilation allowed for.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go

Store heavy things on lower shelves, and do not overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Damp treatment or repairs
  • Electrical work in the room
  • Advice on your lease

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Walk-in wardrobes in Little Stanmore: local notes

About 66% of the homes in the area around Little Stanmore went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Little Stanmore, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Little Stanmore is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your children go to Krishna Avanti Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live near Canons Park, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a flat close to Mill Hill Broadway station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Little Stanmore affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Little Stanmore?

Yes, we work across Harrow, Little Stanmore included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
