Walk-in wardrobes in Childs Hill, Barnet
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Childs Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Childs Hill
How we make walk-in wardrobes for Childs Hill
Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for two wardrobes in one space and somewhere to sit and get ready.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Childs Hill, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- First, you let us know about the space.
- The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, planned around the way you get dressed.
- A written quote is sent to you.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.
How to prepare
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Walk-in wardrobes in Childs Hill: local notes
About 45% of the homes in the area around Childs Hill went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Childs Hill include Annesley Lodge (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Church of St Luke (Grade II*), under half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to All Saints' CofE Primary School NW2 or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Childs Hill
Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe next to the hanging and shoe storage.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A calmer, clearer bedroom
- Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
- A use for a small spare room
If you live near Childs Hill Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Childs Hill
I live near Cricklewood station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
My house in Childs Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers, while leaving space to stand and turn. We will measure and plan it during the design visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
