West Hampstead homes and walk-in wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around West Hampstead were built before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of West Hampstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), under half a mile east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. A van working in West Hampstead will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
If your children go to Emmanuel Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Fenton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Finchley Road & Frognal station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
West Hampstead is within the London Borough of Camden, about 4 miles south-east of St Pancras. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, West Hampstead included. West Hampstead is one of 28 places on our list for Camden.
We work across NW3, NW6 and NW2 for walk-in wardrobes. Streets in the area include Mill Lane, Acol Road and Ajax Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for walk-in wardrobes. The A502 runs close to West Hampstead; on busy main roads, unloading walk-in wardrobes takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Fortune Green (1 mile west), Hampstead (1 mile east), Greenhill (1 mile east), Childs Hill (1 mile north-west) and Vale of Health (1 mile north-east). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as St Pancras (4 miles south-east), West End (4 miles south-east), St Giles (4 miles south-east), Seven Dials (4 miles south-east), Holborn (4 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (3 miles south-east).

We fit furniture in homes around South Hampstead High School, Holly Bush pub and St Anthony's Preparatory School, among other places. There is a railway station in West Hampstead itself: Finchley Road & Frognal station. A little further out are Isokon Gallery (1.2 miles east) and New End Hospital (0.5 miles north-east). For a walk, there’s Westbere Copse and Parliament Hill.
Walk-in wardrobes in West Hampstead: what you get
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. Most enquiries start with a calmer, clearer bedroom and separate space for two people’s clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around West Hampstead, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit walk-in wardrobes and other fitted storage well.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Damp treatment or repairs
- Getting consent under your lease
- New lights or sockets
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging, shelves and drawers
- Shoe storage
- Dressing table
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
Tips worth knowing
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Plan lighting with your electrician
- Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
- Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
If you’re likely to move soon, standalone furniture you can take with you may suit better. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in West Hampstead
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.
Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in West Hampstead. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is West Hampstead in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes, we work across Camden, West Hampstead included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?
In many homes, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We will measure and plan it at the measuring visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
