How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in North End

Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves for shoes and bags and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around North End are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Why bespoke in North End?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights and rarely reach the ceiling. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, so very little space goes to waste. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

North End homes and walk-in wardrobes

In the area around North End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 71 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North End. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in North End needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.

For a family home near The King Alfred School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. For an older house near Church of St Alban the Martyr, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • A use for a small spare room
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

Near listed buildings like The Hill Garden Central Temple Summerhouse, under half a mile south of the centre of North End, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in North End?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hampstead Heath station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How much time does fitting need?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we go through the options when we measure.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
