Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Holloway Down

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, and we design the units to allow for it. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere for shoes to live and somewhere to sit and get ready, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Holloway Down, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after

To get a quote for walk-in wardrobes in Holloway Down, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re likely to move soon, standalone furniture you can take with you may suit better. How long you will stay is worth weighing up before you decide. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why us?

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice

Holloway Down homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 53% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Holloway Down, with about 25% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Holloway Down, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Terraced houses are home to about 37% of households in the area around Holloway Down, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2.4 miles west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Fetter Lane Congregational Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near The Jenny Hammond Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Holloway Down

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Holloway Down?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Holloway Down?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No, wiring is for your electrician. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the units and leave room for the lighting.
