Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Dormers Wells
About our walk-in wardrobes in Dormers Wells
A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, either open to the room or behind doors. Any new partition wall is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. If your home has the right mix of long and short hanging and a side each for a couple, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Around Dormers Wells, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Sort through your clothes before the design visit
Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.
If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.
How fitting day works
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
- You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
Shelves
High shelves suit things you use less often, while daily things stay within reach.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Dormers Wells
In the streets around Dormers Wells, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and the years since 2000 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Dormers Wells, Historic England’s list includes Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Red Lion Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Dormers Wells is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 1.9 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Southall station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to Emmanuel Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Is Dormers Wells in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes, Dormers Wells is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near Southall station?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?
Yes, where the room is large enough. A section of the room can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.
