Questions from Dormers Wells

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Southall station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Is Dormers Wells in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Dormers Wells is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Fitted wardrobes in Dormers Wells

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. If your home has clothes with nowhere proper to go and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Dormers Wells, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

Bedroom storage in Dormers Wells

About 54% of the homes in the streets around Dormers Wells went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Dormers Wells include Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Red Lion Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 33% of households in the area around Dormers Wells live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

If your children go to Dormers Wells Junior School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near Emmanuel Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Southall station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How we price fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. The colour is agreed with you, and touch-ups are simple.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly for a smooth finish. You choose the colour before we start.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
