Walk-in wardrobes in Acton

Walk-in wardrobes in Acton: what you get

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. Typical reasons to get in touch are moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a dressing area in part of a bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Whether your home in Acton is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Know what you will keep before planning
  • Think about whether you want doors

Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them, so the space keeps working. It is worth a rethink each season.

It is useful to know what you will keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so a clear-out first gives a better design.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in a period room.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Acton

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Acton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Will you wire in lights?

No, wiring is for your electrician. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the units and plan space for the lighting you want.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It is your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Walk-in wardrobes in Acton: local notes

In the streets around Acton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Acton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 45% of households in the streets around Acton live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For families living near Derwentwater Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For a flat near Acton Central station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Ealing Common? Walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
