Walk-in Wardrobes in Kevington

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kevington, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Walk-in wardrobes in Kevington: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a side each for a couple.

Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, which leaves the other walls for storage. Many homes around Kevington were built in the post-war decades, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bedrooms in Kevington: local notes

In the area around Kevington, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 43%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Kevington, Historic England’s list includes Kevington Hall (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and Blueberry Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Kevington is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your children go to Manor Oak Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a flat close to St Mary Cray station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Unity Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it is useful to tell us at the design visit.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Advice

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kevington?

Yes. Kevington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kevington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Electrical work in the room
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

  • Birch plywood

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.
