What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Plaistow

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. If you’re living with somewhere for shoes to live and a dressing area in part of a bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Plaistow, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Count your coats and long garments

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly if it is on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units, so air can circulate.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Plaistow

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Plaistow, with about 20% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Plaistow include Quernmore Secondary School (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Hollow Bottom Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Plaistow, let us know at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary’s Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses like Bromley Palace, about 1.2 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live near Downham Fields, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Plaistow is about 5 miles south-east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Anywhere in Plaistow, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our Bromley coverage includes Plaistow.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Plaistow

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Plaistow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Plaistow?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Plaistow included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
