About our walk-in wardrobes in Wealdstone

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, especially on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. If your home has setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a calmer, clearer bedroom, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Wealdstone, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Wealdstone?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow & Wealdstone station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

What it is made from

Hanging rails

Long hanging is kept for coats and dresses, with double hanging elsewhere.

Shelves

We plan shelving for knitwear, bags and things you use less often. Each shelf is sized for its load.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Bedrooms in Wealdstone: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Wealdstone were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and before 1919 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Wealdstone. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Wealdstone (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 0.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Harrow & Wealdstone station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Magistrates Court, less than half a mile south of the centre of Wealdstone, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Plastering, decorating or flooring
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Fixing the cause of damp

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
