About our walk-in wardrobes in The Hale
Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, especially on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. If you’re living with shelves for shoes and bags and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around The Hale, bedrooms normally have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions from The Hale
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in The Hale?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in The Hale?
Yes. The Hale is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
Walk-in wardrobes in The Hale: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 58% of the housing in the neighbourhood around The Hale, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of The Hale, Historic England’s list includes John Keble Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 58% of homes in the area around The Hale date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
For families living near Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Stoneyfields Park? Walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Tips worth knowing
People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- Count your coats and long garments
- Count your shoes before the design visit
- Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
- Have a clear-out before we measure
New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.
A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in a period room.
Hanging rails
Hanging rails can be set for long or double hanging, based on what you wear.
How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the room.
- We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways.

How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
