Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Staples Corner, we will see what fits. If you are living with glare from a window on the screen and an alcove or landing that could take a desk, that’s what home offices are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around Staples Corner, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Consider your chair when planning the desk
- Think about where the sockets are now
Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. We will show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. That way, you can start work straight away.
Do not overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.
How it is made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits desks, long shelves and drawer boxes. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. That helps on a well-used desk.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch with some details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
- At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
- The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Empty the space we will be working in
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
Advice
Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Staples Corner?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Staples Corner?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
What happens during the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?
In many rooms, yes. We plan the office so there’s still space for guests, or with doors that hide the desk away. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.
Honest limits
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

More for homes in Staples Corner
Fitted home offices for homes in Staples Corner
About 38% of the homes in the area around Staples Corner went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Staples Corner, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Barnet sets its own rules. If your road in Staples Corner falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

For families living near Parkfield Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. Close to Clarefield Park?
