Wall Beds in Upper Edmonton

Planning wall beds for a home in Upper Edmonton? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Wall beds in Upper Edmonton

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a spare room that’s rarely slept in and more floor space in a studio flat.

Wherever your home in Upper Edmonton sits in London’s mix of housing, wall beds are designed for the room as it is. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It’s useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Advice

Common questions about wall beds

Do you make wall beds for homes in Upper Edmonton?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Upper Edmonton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Edmonton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits during the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Bedroom storage in Upper Edmonton

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Upper Edmonton were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and before 1919 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Upper Edmonton is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are home to about 40% of households in the neighbourhood around Upper Edmonton, according to Census 2021. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live in a flat close to Silver Street station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What wall beds can’t fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

The problems wall beds solve

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Cupboards and shelving either side make the whole wall useful.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A flexible room for a growing family

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
