Fitted bedroom furniture in Picketts Lock

Homes built before 1919 make up about 27% of the housing in the area around Picketts Lock, with about 20% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Picketts Lock is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Picketts Lock joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your children go to Delta Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Pymmes Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Living in a block of flats near Ponders End station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Walk-in wardrobes in Picketts Lock

Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. If you are living with shelves for shoes and bags and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. A home in Picketts Lock might be either, or neither. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit

Store heavy things on lower shelves and spread the weight along the rails. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We cannot advise on your lease.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so walk-in wardrobes arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, so very little space goes to waste. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Picketts Lock

Does a conservation area in or near Picketts Lock affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Picketts Lock?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Picketts Lock is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We’ll measure and plan it at the measuring visit.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
