Hackney Wick Wall Beds

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Hackney Wick starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A spare room that is rarely slept in
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A flexible room for a growing family

Wall beds for homes in Hackney Wick

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are more floor space in a studio flat and a flexible room for a growing family.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Around Hackney Wick, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Your questions about wall beds in Hackney Wick

Can you make wall beds for a home in Hackney Wick?

Yes, Hackney Wick is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Hackney Wick?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each wall bed is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the room. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Do you supply the mattress?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which can make a small room usable. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Hackney Wick homes and wall beds

About 65% of the homes in the streets around Hackney Wick went up since 2000, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hackney Wick. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the streets around Hackney Wick (about 65%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.

Sutton House, about 1.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary of Eton, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Hackney Wick is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 3 miles south-west of Whitechapel. Wherever you are in Hackney Wick, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it’s fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
