Wall Beds in Donnybrook Quarter

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Donnybrook Quarter starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

Your questions about wall beds in Donnybrook Quarter

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Donnybrook Quarter?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How are wall beds priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Wall beds in Donnybrook Quarter: what you get

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. If your home has room for a desk and a guest bed and a playroom that can sleep visitors, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Donnybrook Quarter date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms are often compact, with plasterboard walls. Wall beds are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

The problems wall beds solve

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it make the whole wall useful.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

Living in a block of flats near Hackney Wick station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What to check before you book

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. First, you let us know about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How it’s made

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Bed mechanism housing

The housing has to be strong and square, so it’s built from sturdy board. It’s fixed to a sound wall or floor.
