Bedroom storage in Tower Hill

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Tower Hill went up since 2000, and about 23% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 257 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tower Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. Vans bringing furniture to Tower Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter ad Vincula, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near London Fenchurch Street station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Wall beds in Tower Hill: what you get

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. Most enquiries start with a guest bed that disappears in the day and storage built around a fold-down bed, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 sometimes have big windows that take up much of a wall, so the remaining walls have to work harder. That is worth planning for around Tower Hill, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Do you need wall beds in Tower Hill?

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A study that doubles as a spare room

If your children go to The Aldgate School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving the front a smooth finish.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Electrical work for reading lights

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Questions from Tower Hill

Can you make wall beds for a home in Tower Hill?

Yes. Tower Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Tower Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the design visit and plan the layout around it.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
