Wall beds in Hadley

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a guest bed that disappears in the day and a playroom that can sleep visitors.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Hadley, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

Questions from Hadley

Do you cover homes near New Barnet station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hadley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How much space does a wall bed need?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this during the design visit, so the design works.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood gives a strong carcass for a piece that moves every day.

Wall beds in Hadley: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Hadley, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Hadley, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Stable Block to Hadley House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Barnet included. Vans bringing furniture to Hadley fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to New Barnet station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Hadley is about 4 miles south of Finchley, in the London Borough of Barnet. Anywhere in Hadley, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Barnet, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

In EN5 and EN4, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here such as Byng Road, Park Road and Dury Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for wall beds. The A1081 run close to Hadley, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.
