Hadley TV and Media Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Hadley, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall

About our TV and media units in Hadley

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That is work for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. If your home has cables trailing across the wall and standard units leaving gaps, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In an area like Hadley, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Hadley

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John the Baptist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and top. It makes the unit look built in.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Living-room carpentry in Hadley: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Hadley, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 77 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hadley. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Around Hadley, about 42% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Close to King George's Fields (Monken Hadley)? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Hadley is about 4 miles south of Finchley, part of the London Borough of Barnet. Whether your home in Hadley is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Across Barnet, we cover Hadley, along with the rest of the borough.

If your home is on a street such as Byng Road, Park Road and Dury Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for TV and media units. Main roads around Hadley include the A1081. Close by, we also work in High Barnet (1 mile west), Arkley (1 mile south-west), Totteridge (1 mile south) and Rowley Green (2 miles west). Your questions about TV and media units in Hadley

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hadley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Hadley affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

We do not do electrical work. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Hadley?

Yes, we do. We design and make TV and media units for homes in Hadley, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
