Wealdstone Wall Beds

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make wall beds for homes in Wealdstone, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A studio that works by day and night

Wall beds in Wealdstone: what you get

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and comes down when it is time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Typical reasons to get in touch are a real mattress for visitors and a hobby room with a bed for guests; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Wealdstone, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Wall beds in Wealdstone: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in the streets around Wealdstone, with about 29% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Wealdstone is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Wealdstone is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Magistrates Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions from Wealdstone

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Wealdstone?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow & Wealdstone station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That varies with the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. First, you let us know about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home.

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
