Wall beds for homes in Teddington

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a home office that also sleeps guests; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Teddington, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

FAQs: wall beds in Teddington

Do you make wall beds for homes in Teddington?

Yes. Teddington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Teddington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Teddington

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Teddington were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. 18 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Teddington. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Richmond upon Thames is no exception. Where a street in Teddington is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.8 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live near Bushy Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Why people ask for wall beds in Teddington

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it make the whole wall useful.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode
