How fitting works for wall beds

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Advice

How we make wall beds for Chiswick

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage built around a fold-down bed and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Chiswick date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

The problems wall beds solve

Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use

If you live in a period home close to St. Nicholas Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make wall beds for homes in Chiswick?

Yes. Chiswick is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Chiswick is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How much space does a wall bed need?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the design visit and plan the layout around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Bedroom storage in Chiswick

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chiswick were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Chiswick, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Around Chiswick, about 53% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Near listed buildings like Chiswick House Conservatory, less than half a mile south of the centre of Chiswick, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Chiswick station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
