Walk-in wardrobes in Kew, Richmond upon Thames

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kew, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • A side each for a couple

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high and spread the weight along the rails. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

Walk-in wardrobes in Kew

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Most enquiries start with storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Kew are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Kew homes and walk-in wardrobes

In the streets around Kew, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Kew, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the area around Kew (about 48%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room, with storage scribed to walls that wander.

Close to Kew Green? Walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your children go to Grove Park Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Every quote follows a design visit

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Kew

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Kew?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it at the design visit.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
