Wall Beds in Peaks Hill

In Peaks Hill, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. We design your wall bed at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A storage wall with a bed inside

Wall beds in Peaks Hill: what you get

Our wall beds are made for homes in Peaks Hill and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know ahead of time. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a real mattress for visitors and shelves or a desk around the bed.

Around Peaks Hill, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Is it time for wall beds?

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A flexible room for a growing family

Living in a block of flats near Purley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Materials and finishes

Bed mechanism housing

We design the housing around the mechanism and the mattress it takes.

Hand-painted finish

We can hand paint the cabinet in your home, once it’s fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Supplying mattresses

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

Your questions about wall beds in Peaks Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Peaks Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Peaks Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That varies with the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

How much does a wall bed cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each wall bed is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the room. To get started, use our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Peaks Hill

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Peaks Hill, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Peaks Hill is within about a quarter of a mile of the Webb Estate Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 44% of homes in the area around Peaks Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Close to Carshalton Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a family home near Coloma Convent Girls' School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
