Wall beds in Woodcote

How we make wall beds for Woodcote

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. If you are living with a study that doubles as a spare room and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Woodcote, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The overall size of the piece

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Woodcote homes and wall beds

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Woodcote, with about 25% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Woodcote is partly covered by the Upper Woodcote Village Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live in a flat close to Reedham (London) station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Swithun's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, with children kept well back while it moves.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Your questions about wall beds in Woodcote

I live near Reedham (London) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Woodcote?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the design. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Is it time for wall beds?

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

If you live near Dollypers Hill, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
