Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Walk-in wardrobes in Peaks Hill

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there is space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. Most enquiries start with a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and room for two wardrobes in one space; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Peaks Hill, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Is Peaks Hill in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Peaks Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Peaks Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers, while leaving space to stand and turn. We check the room at the design visit.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Peaks Hill

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

Living in a block of flats near Purley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled, painted to match. You can mix doors with open storage.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits a dressing room that should look crisp, and it is finished before fitting day.

Practical tips

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Count your shoes before the design visit
  • Have a clear-out before we measure

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Peaks Hill homes and walk-in wardrobes

About 44% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Peaks Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Webb Estate Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Peaks Hill. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Peaks Hill, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For families living near Coloma Convent Girls' School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Carshalton Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
